Can hydronic fluid be used in a radiant floor heating system?
Question by scottsod69: Can hydronic fluid be used in a radiant floor heating system?
Instead of using water, in a closed system can a hydronic heat transfer fluid such as is used in hydronic baseboard heaters be used. Would there be a benefit over water as advertised in those baseboard systems?
Best answer:
Answer by Plumber Guy
Yes it can be used but you have to have it on a closed loop system with a heat exchanger and expansion tank unless your heating system is already a closed loop from your domestic. It does transfer heat a little better and the big upside is if you lose power or the ability to heat up ur slap it wont freeze and burst

How do you hook up an electric hydronic baseboard?
Question by Mike D: How do you hook up an electric hydronic baseboard?
Changing some baseboards in my house and currently have electric baseboard heat. I saw these electric hyrdonic baseboard heaters at Home Depot. Will these just wire up or do I need a water line or anything else? It says that the heating element is immersed in a liquid to radiate the heat better. Thanks
What are the advantages of using one of these versus just a normal electric baseboard? They are about 3 times as much money.
Best answer:
Answer by mike b
While it will not really radiate the heat any better or be any more efficient (all electric heat is 100% efficient) it should wire up the same way.
As long as the new heaters are the same voltage and wattage as the existing heaters you should be able to just remove the old and install the new.
If your new heaters are higher or lower wattage or a different voltage you should contact an electrician to do the install.

Hydronic Radiant Floor Heating ? How Does It Work?
Hydronic Radiant Floor Heating ? How Does It Work?
So, you’re sold on the idea of underfloor heating. Of course, the question “What kind of system do I get?” Floor heating comes in three varieties: electric, hydraulic (liquid), and air-based systems. The hydraulic system is the most popular, for reasons that will soon be announced.
The “how” of the hydraulic floor heating is fairly simple. A boiler heats the water that is pumped through your house. The water flows through aNetwork of tubing that sits just below your floor, radiating the heat outwards, so that you have a nice, consistent heat that are the hallmark of the floor heating systems.-Floor heat
This method provides a very efficient system. In fact, the most popular
Can I put two hydronic radiators on the same supply and return on two different floors?
Question by eas442: Can I put two hydronic radiators on the same supply and return on two different floors?
I live in a small house with hydronic heat. The original homeowner moved a radiator from the master bedroom to the basement bathroom directly below. All the original piping was used, just diverted downward with tees and vent plugs installed in the upward facing tee outlets.
Can I install another radiator in my master bedroom fed from the same tees? (removing the air vents since the second radiator has them built-in and running pipe back upward) This would mean the same supply and return would feed two radiators on two different floors.
It’s a single zone house. It’s a “monoflow tee” type system with both supplies and returns feeding into the same loop.

I have no experiance with this type of system but it sounds very logical to try that. If its not too costly i would give it a shot. cant think of a reason it wouldnt work

Hydronic Systems (Boilers)

In a hydronic heating system, water is heated by a boiler and then circulated to every room in the house to baseboard units, stand alone radiators, or radiant tubing hidden in the floors. The result is healthy, quiet, draft-free, clean, and comforting warmth. Your home will no longer have hot spots, cold spots or drafts . just gentle, even heat that automatically regulates itself to your desired comfort level. And it is very quiet! You will not even notice that the heating system is operating. Hydronic heating systems include condensing boilers that can have 95 percent efficiency ratings and have modulating burners. These units are small and can supply enough hot water for household use and heat a home up to 2500 . 3000 square feet in size. A hydronic system can satisfy all your heating needs, even when you remodel or expand your home. Hydronic heating is the answer for comfort to every part of your home, inside and outside.

Hydronic Boilers, Floor Heating with Tankless Water Heater
As tankless water heaters become more popular they present new applications. A tankless water heater used in floor heating can significantly reduce heating costs and is environmentally friendly.
Storage Tank Hydronic Boilers are a thing of the past. Tankless Water Heater is a great application in replacing that old Hydronic Boiler. It will save Energy and be much more efficient. The system with a Tankless Water Heater will also be much more responsive, have unlimited supply of Hot Water and clean water running through the floor heating pipes without sediments and other mineral build-ups.
The traditional boiler works very much like a storage tank water heater. The boiler stores some amount of water in its tank that it continuously heats. The floor heating system is triggered through activation of water circulating pumps. The pump circulates the hot water from the boiler tank through the

do you think it’s a good idea to switch from cast radiators to hydronic baseboards;which are the most efficient
Best answer:
Answer by wicket351
i would absolutely not switch to hot water baseboard , cast iron radiators are more efficent , they may initially take more energy to heat up , but once the heating season is fully here they hold their heat long wich means the run alot less . Lots of mass is very comfortable heat . Don’t forget all the labor for the switch over to baseboard . a informative link below , go on the forum ask the experts , men and women that work in the trade . . i have been working for a plumbing and heating contractor for nearly 15 years but these guys live and breath the stuff .Good luck

Answer by yaket2003
Hydronic heat is hot water running thru the hvac unit or in this case baseboard heaters. this is usually generated by the water heater. You will find this used in the south. It does not generate enough heat to work in colder climates. Many times I have turned the water heater up so people could keep their apartment warm and still have a hot shower. If you have any more questions please put them in the detail section.
