Home Heating, using Baseboard heaters?

Question by foxtrotman28: Home Heating, using Baseboard heaters?
I just moved into a new 3 bedroom 2 story home. It has no central heat and air in it and is a rather old home. It appears remodeled for the most part (New insulation was pumped in I’d say a year or two ago). My question is this. I have 5 baseboard heaters (2 Upstairs, 3 Down), 1 Fake Fireplace (Gas) and Very Large electric heater (7 feet tall, 2 feet by 2 feet). Are Baseboard heaters good for conserving energy? At the moment all but 2 are turned off. The large electric heater is unplugged because it was’nt vented properly and is stripping paint on the outside of the house. The average electric bill before we moved in was 0. The previous owners looked like power hogs though, no energy efficient light bulbs, etc. I was looking for advice on how to cut the bill down (All needed light bulbs are now energy efficient, they had 70w-100w! In every one). Someone told me baseboard heaters (electric) are’nt good at conserving energy, how truthful is that statement? Sorry for the long question. Any help would be appreciated
By the way I live in an area that gets to 40 below in the winter. I winterized the house as much as I could (plastic on the windows, etc)

aww man lol we have baseboard heat too- with huge windows and an older than dirt boiler that’s stuck together with gum! my best advice is to look into getting a blower insert for your fireplace, covering your windows with the winterizing kits and keeping your house thermostat set to at least 65. the baseboard water heating idea on the whole is less expensive than a furnace but its dependent on your boiler or water heater. have it checked for leaks. even the tiniest leak could end up costing you more than using your electric heater.

Q&A: Heating a cold appartment with radiant dish heater?

Question by Chris: Heating a cold appartment with radiant dish heater?
All of our electric baseboard heaters are located right under the windows. And because of our humidity problem we have to keep the windows open a bit.
So the heaters are always on at the coldest places in the house. I would think this would make them run more and use more energy.
At work we got one of those small dish radiant heaters from Costco. I read the box it came in and it says it uses way less energy then other electric heaters.
Would it make more sense to get one of those and put in the living room farther away from the windows?
What do you think?

if you have too much humidity invest in a dehumidifier if you don’t have enough get a humidifier that way you can just close the windows.

Electric baseboard heating? What do I need to know purchase replacement heaters?

Question by Curious1: Electric baseboard heating? What do I need to know purchase replacement heaters?
We have electric baseboard heating that has functioned very well for many years. However, they are now starting to provide less than adequate heat or not work at all. We do not have ducting for forced air heating and cooling, and the extra insulation and attention to detail in the original contruction has meant that electric heat has not become unduly burdensome even with rising electicity costs. Any advice will be appreciated.

Baseboard heating: Leave on or turn down when gone?

Question by Jen: Baseboard heating: Leave on or turn down when gone?
I have electric baseboard heaters. Should I turn them down when I’m gone or leave them at a constant temp, in order to save money?

Thanks!
I heard that if you turn it down, when you turn it back up it has to work twice as hard and costs more than just leaving it set at a constant temp. Is this true?

3 Popular Radiant Panel Heating Systems Compared

3 Popular Radiant Panel Heating Systems Compared

If you search online for information about “radiant panel heating” you’ll quickly discover the same phrase is used to describe three completely different heating systems.

To help you zero in on what you’re looking for, I’ve compiled a list of the systems that can be described as radiant panel heating and a brief explanation of how they work.

Electric Radiant Ceiling Panels
Radiant ceiling panels are about 1 inch thick, and range in size from 2′x 2′ to 2′ x 8′. They are textured to look like the ceiling and can be painted to match the room’s decor with any quality water based acrylic paint.

The simple design and easy installation of electric ceiling panels lends itself well to remodeling or retrofit applications.

The panels operate at 150-170 degrees F and radiate heat to objects and people in the room. The panel itself reaches operating temperature in only three to five minutes.

The advantage is heating only the

Options For Installing Heating And Ventilation In A Home Workshop

Options For Installing Heating And Ventilation In A Home Workshop

Heating is a necessity for most shops in North America. Some woodworking tasks demand it; gluing and finishing in particular require steady temperatures. Heating your shop also makes it more comfortable and safe; numb fingers invite accidents.

If your shop is some distance from your home’s furnace, a separate heating system will be needed. Many woodworkers swear by wood heat; it has the added benefit of consuming scrap pieces. Yet this means frequently feeding the stove and cleaning the chimney; insuring your shop against fire can also be a problem. Electric baseboard units are more convenient, but can contribute to high utility bills and frequently are clogged with sawdust.

Portable kerosene and propane burners should be avoided in the shop, since they use an open flame and emit toxic exhaust. Coil-type electric heaters are also a fire hazard.

Whichever heating system you choose, keep the area around it free of sawdust and place it away from the

OIl fired boiler for baseboard heating and electric hot water heater for hot water – any way to save money?

Question by dideyjohn: OIl fired boiler for baseboard heating and electric hot water heater for hot water – any way to save money?

Best answer:

Answer by roadlessgraveled
If you plan to keep both of those, insulation is the best way to save money.
Insulate the water tank and the pipes from it for 5′.
Turn the temp on the water heater as low as you can tolerate.

Insulate your attic as much as you can, upgrade your windows if they are not good thermopanes, add heavy curtains or cellular blinds, weatherstrip your doors, insulate attic access, insulate sill boxes in basement, insulate perimeter of foundation with at least an inch of foam to 2′ below grade.
One other “trick” is to provide outside air for your boiler so the air it uses for combustion doesn’t have to be pulled through every window/outlet/door and sidewall in the house. By putting a pvc pipe to the outside, with the outlet close to the boiler air intake, you can reduce the drafty feeling in the house, and less warm air is going up the chimney because it is pulling in outside air directly. A motorized damper on that air inlet is best, that opens when the boiler turns on.

However, if the oil boiler is older…think seriously about replacing it with a gas boiler. The difference in efficiency, and the use of “direct vent” makes a huge difference.
