Window Heater, makes more heat, can stay all year

youtube}

We made this window heater a few years back. It works great. It is all wood and only have aluminum inside for thermal storage. I need to replace some of the tinfoil. This unit can heat my 590sq/ft mobile home by itself when the temperature outside is above 40 F and the sun is shining. Above 50 F and it will be to hot inside. The temperature inside the unit gets up to 130 F. This unit saved me a lot of money back when I used oil to heat. It has 3 pieces of glass We got from Lowe’s. Each class has a rubber double sided tape type of foam seal. The lead works both to close the unit in the summer and in the winter the aluminum makes the unit produce extra heat. So we don’t have to take it down in the summer. I almost forgot. The wood was all free, yes I recycled it. this play small like wood all winter, so find a wood that smell good to you and use it. I did not paint the sides of the unit black because I do not want it making heat in the summer. That being said, i do need to look at painting it some color, maybe white of blue. The next one I make would have the cross pieces inside painted black. I may go back later and make the unit self closing to prevent airflow at night. This unit is also facing west so it starts making heat around noon. I would add one to the east side but did not have a window there. The south side has trees blocking the sun. If your lease says they pay for heat but you have electric heaters who pays for the electric heat?

Question by sweetness: If your lease says they pay for heat but you have electric heaters who pays for the electric heat?
they are the baseboard heaters. NOT the type you plug in. I have it on the middle setting right now and it’s FREEZING in my place, my bill was outstanding last month , I had them blasting. Also, if you pay elec, and they say they pay heat, but it’s elec. heat, how would they seperate that?

Using the oven to heat the kitchen?

Question by Imani: Using the oven to heat the kitchen?
My mother used to turn on our oven on cold mornings to heat the kitchen a little bit. We were arguing about it this weekend, because she said that she did it because it was less expensive than turning on the electric baseboard heater in the kitchen.. I said it wouldn’t use any less electricity.. and wouldn’t be cheaper. Who is right?

Best answer:

Answer by Annie
Whoa…that is dangerous. I will turn the oven on when it’s cold to bake stuff, like cakes or special meals. But it goes off when I’m done. It’s dangerous, because when yo use it just to heat the house, you will forget to turn it off. Don’t you watch the news? That’s how a lot of fires start in the winter.

Question by virgoluv: How many square feet will a 20,000 btu natural gas radient vent free wall heater with blower- heat?
Understandably, it depends on insulation and other comparables, Like a home, compared to a garage or shop. I mean just roughly, so I know where to place it to get the most heat for the area. ( inside the home ) Thanks!

Answer by nateatthefarm
You want to look at BTU output not BTU input first.Roughly you can figure 20 BTU per square foot if it snows in the winter time

Electric Baseboard Heat Question?

Question by Sks144: Electric Baseboard Heat Question?
I have a few electric baseboard heaters in my apartment at college, and since they are my only source of heat, I generally run them constantly at a moderate temperature.. It generally runs up my electric bill a good bit, almost 200 a month, but I don’t have many other options.. Anyways, I will be going home for winter break for a month, and I was wondering whether I should just turn off all the heaters, because they are expensive to run and I won’t even be there (fire hazard as well).. There is an apartment below me and one above me, I am in the middle, so I am not too worried about pipes freezing, but I don’t know what else I should be concerned with.. Can anyone give me some advice?

Best answer:

Answer by daffyduct2006
If you’re confident the pipes won’t freeze, shut em off. I in doubt, set em at 50 degrees.

In all heaters there should be a thermostat, check that it’s operating and it’s not turned right down, if it is although there is power going to them they won’t heat up,…… good luck.

Would it be cheaper to use electric baseboard heat or portable heaters to heat a studio in the winter?

Question by Anna: Would it be cheaper to use electric baseboard heat or portable heaters to heat a studio in the winter?
I will be living in a third floor studio (about 400 sq. feet) in Chicago. The management has recently installed electric baseboard heat, therefore I was not able to get price quotes, before signing the lease. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with electric baseboard heat and how much it costs during the winter months? What would be a cheaper alternative? I signed a lease for a year – so I would not be able to make any major changes. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Best answer:

Answer by Steven J
Kerosene heaters, propane heaters, or prefeerably natural gas heaters. Just have a vent for the exhaust.

Electric baseboard heaters are energy inefficent.

Electric is the most expensive source of energy.

And baseboard heating is even worse.
