If I disconnect (remove) my thermostat, will it keep the heaters from comming on?

Question by NEWTOME: If I disconnect (remove) my thermostat, will it keep the heaters from comming on?
I’ve got those electric baseboard heaters all around the basement but I also have a monitor, which I prefer to use. I don’t want to use the electric heaters, and there’s an outlet I need to use that’s on the same circuit. I thought I could disconnect the thermostat and that would disable them – would that work?

Yes; there is no way for the connection to be made.

Why is there a strange scent coming from the baseboard heater?

Question by Mrs. Heathcliff: Why is there a strange scent coming from the baseboard heater?
My family and I moved into a 30+year old house over the summer. The former tenants were an 80 year old couple, and we suspect they lived in the downstairs, so the heaters may not have been in use for several years. The problem is, the heaters emit this horrible scent. If I could describe it, it smells of rust and something else. Even with opening windows and turning them on several times, it’s not going away. We have electric baseboard heat in all the rooms, and all give off the same scent. Does anyone know what could be causing this, and how to fix it? We’re renting the house.

yuk, yeah!

If they are electric bace heaters, it is the baked on dust, mildew dead bugs and all the other stuff of the previous owner. Electric base heaters, to me are the worste heat applicators out there. They’re horrible. BUT……they are 100% efficient. You’ve got to find a way to clean off the fins, the little heat radiators, that have been “caked” with dust.

I have a gas wall heater from my old house that had an outdoor tank. My new house has city gas. ?

Question by shovelhead_greg: I have a gas wall heater from my old house that had an outdoor tank. My new house has city gas. ?
Is there any difference? Can i run my old heater as it is?

Best answer:

Answer by JC R
It’s probably different (propane vs natural gas), so I’d say probably not. Some heaters will run both but they’re not common. Call your gas company – they will tell you for sure.

Sick from electric heater?

Question by yaoi_flavored_pocky: Sick from electric heater?
I moved into my apartment 6 months ago, and turned my electric baseboard heaters on for the first time a little over a week ago. I was awake for the first hour or two it was on, and I felt fine. When I woke up the next morning, I had a nasty headache, was dizzy, very nauseous, and started vomiting within an hour.
I turned the heater off and reluctantly left the house later on. For the two hours or so I had been in the apt, I had continued to feel sick, but within 2-3 hours of leaving, I felt basically back to normal. That night, I came home, and I turned the heaters on again – but only about halfway on.
The next morning, I again woke up with a headache and nauseated, though this time not as severely. Again, within 2-3 hours of leaving the house, I felt fine. I then left the heaters completely off three night in a row, and was perfectly fine, but I turned the heaters on again last night, and woke up sick this morning.
Does anyone know what’s wrong with my heaters?

Are you sure that you have an ELECTRIC heater? You’re describing a lot of the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning, but that’s only created by improperly vented GAS heaters of one sort or another (kerosene, too). Is it possible that the heaters in your place are electric *fans* that get their actual heat from a gas source?

First, check with your apartment complex management to be SURE that those are electric heaters. If they don’t sound absolutely certain, then contact the municipality in which you live to find out if your complex has gas service. If it does, it’s possible that you’re somehow getting carbon monoxide from SOMETHING on the property. Don’t forget about a gas water heater, too, or a gas-fired community boiler of some sort.

It’s not a bad idea to get a carbon monoxide detector; it’s not much money considering it could save your life.

If ANY of it happens again, call 911; it sounds like you’re getting carbon monoxide from SOME source, and that is deadly stuff.

Good luck!

Will natural gas be emitted from a gas wall heater if the thermostat is on but the pilot light is off?

Question by Lisa Simon: Will natural gas be emitted from a gas wall heater if the thermostat is on but the pilot light is off?
I may have left the thermostat on but the pilot light off on my sister’s gas wall heater. Will this emit natural gas or since the pilot light is off will the flow of natural gas be blocked?
It’s a gas wall heater, not a water heater.

So, Chris, what you’re saying is that if the pilot light is not lit, even if the thermostat wants to turn on the heat, the gas will not flow because the pilot light is not lit? Therefore, the house is safe?

Best answer:

Answer by Chris
It is blocked, there is a thermocouple that measures the pilot temperature, if it is not hot the gas will not turn on.

Has anyone else noticed a smokey film coming up from their electric baseboard heaters?

Question by sue g: Has anyone else noticed a smokey film coming up from their electric baseboard heaters?
All of mine are doing it. There are two of them that are worse than the others. Is this normal?

Best answer:

Answer by Handey Randy
The smokey film comes from dust that settled on the heater fins, and is now being vaporized into the room air, and sticking to walls from the heat process.

To eliminate future film, vacuum the fins monthly, or at least before the heating unit is restarted in the fall.

The Ideal Greenhouse Heaters To Choose From

The Ideal Greenhouse Heaters To Choose From

The reason why greenhouse heaters are so important is due to the fact that the temperature changes on regular basis through out the day and night. At some stage it could drop to a low point that would not be very healthy for the plants.

That is the main reason why it is vital to keep the temperature at a suitable level so that the plants growth will be successful. Another factor to remember is that the waste that is created is released into the greenhouse which will then require you

Can Butane From Wall Heaters Cause Cancer If Inhaled In A Non Ventilated Area? ?

Question by Mario: Can Butane From Wall Heaters Cause Cancer If Inhaled In A Non Ventilated Area? ?
It concerns me because I have a small wall heater in my bedroom that works off of butane. I have the heater on 24/7 during the winter time because it’s so cold here and gas is free where I live.

Best answer:

Answer by Billme
Cancer will not start to grow until the correct conditions are there.

It also requires your body to become acidic before you get cancer.

The heater itself will not cause the cancer. However it can not prevent it either.

Good Luck!
