Looking for advice on Electric Outdoor Patio Heaters (Wall Mounted)?
Question by EG: Looking for advice on Electric Outdoor Patio Heaters (Wall Mounted)?
I have an outdoor area behind a bar/restaurant about 10 feet wide by 30 feet long. I want to heat the area over the winter and do not want to deal with propane stand up heaters again. Does anyone have any recommendations for electric heater(s)that I can mount overhead? I know I may need to buy a few to heat the entire area. I have heard that standard 120v is a waste of time…that I must wire it with 240v. Any advice???

My advice is do not use electric NO MATTER WHAT!!!!!!!! They cost so much more to run than gas or propane. Get some wall mounted propane or gas radiant heaters like these.

The install cost will be higher but it will have a very short payback due to the LARGE cost savings to run them vs electric.

landlord was stealing electric and possably oil,NOW the new tenants found out and are realy running up bill?
Question by humananimal_71: landlord was stealing electric and possably oil,NOW the new tenants found out and are realy running up bill?
Hi,
I have been renting the same apartment in Westerly for almost 6 years. All of my utilities are in the basement apartment. I have always had suspicions about the landlord, who until recently was living in the other apartment which includes the basement of the whole house, was stealing electric and oil. the basement contains a kitchen, bathroom, family room, utility room, hallway, and two more rooms all wired to me. I have asked him on a few occasions if there was anything in the basement wired to me because my bill was higher than it should be and he said “no”. Recently after blowing a string of fuses (ironically at the same time the new tenant was doing work on the basement using my power) I discovered that almost all of the lights and outlets in the basement come from my fuse box. I discovered this because when I replaced my fuse (my box is in the tenant’s apartment) a bunch of lights came on. I then got a tester and went around and tested everything. Also I discovered an extra pump on my boiler that still goes to heat in the basement and a hole in the wall where the thermostat was and the wiring (still live) inside. when you touch the wires together the pump kicks on and the radiator starts working (only source of heat in the basement). Previously we had a problem where our heat would not turn off. I told the landlord and he did nothing. I asked around and was told there must be another thermostat in the house. I asked the landlord and he said no. During the period when the landlord was moving out there was a lot of clanking noises and fuel smell coming from the room where my oil tank is. At the same time he had a gas water heater installed.
when the new tenant moved in he had to have the electric baseboard heaters in the basement fixed because it was too cold down there and they never worked. They are 220 heaters that were wired to 110 meaning they were never operational. As far as I can tell presently I am the only one drawing off my oil tank (which is the only one in the house). But the power is still connected to me at this time. I told the landlord about what I found and that I needed to have an electrician look at my power. He didn’t believe me and wanted to see for himself before he would let anyone else in to look. Then after talking to the tenant downstairs to tell him he called me back and pushed it back another day “on the tenants request” .First he said as far as he knew everything had been switched. then a minute later said that he never used the lights in the ceiling because he knew they were wired to me. (so isn’t everything else). when he arrived I showed him by shutting off my main fuse and watching lights go out and testing outlets with a tester. He said “oh now I see”. He said he would give me ” a month and put a lock on my fuse box” I told him that wouldn’t solve the problem and asked him about the almost six years of electric I paid that wasn’t mine. He denied ever using it himself. He said “I’ll rent you the other apartment too so you can get to your fuse box.” Obviously I said this was crazy. Then this being the 2nd of April he asked for the rent. I told him I was going to hold it until this got resolved. He then told me “you will have to move then.” I could go on forever about this there really is a lot.
I really don’t know who to turn to or what my options are.
please let me know if you don’t handle this kind of thing and maybe point me in the right direction.
I am having a really hard time finding anyone to get on my side. I have all bills and records.
i have contacted the local housing athourity, electric co., went to the local building offices, contacted lawyers, the only answer is to handle it myself and take him to small claims court.
I cant believe there is no agency to help!

Think I’d have to talk to a lawyer! May want to go ahead and move too! Wouldn’t give that crook another dime! Seems to me that that landlord needs to be sued! Good luck and so sorry that you’re having to deal with such!!!

Answer by my avatar is hot but I’m not
You honestly could have said this in about 3 sentences… I’ve been paying for all the electric use in a rental complex while the other side isn’t paying anything.
So the bottom line comes down to what your rental agreement says, and if you can prove it by showing there is no other bill arriving at the address for anyone else. If there is, your claim is done. If you’re getting the only bill, I would take that information to an attorney and see what your options are, but don’t hold your breath, by the time you pay for an action you’re better off moving.

If your lease says they pay for heat but you have electric heaters who pays for the electric heat?
Question by sweetness: If your lease says they pay for heat but you have electric heaters who pays for the electric heat?
they are the baseboard heaters. NOT the type you plug in. I have it on the middle setting right now and it’s FREEZING in my place, my bill was outstanding last month , I had them blasting. Also, if you pay elec, and they say they pay heat, but it’s elec. heat, how would they seperate that?

What is the maximum wattage of electric heaters that you can put on a single 20A circuit?
Question by some_math_guy: What is the maximum wattage of electric heaters that you can put on a single 20A circuit?
Not being an electrician, but having done a lot of wiring in my house (!), my thinking is that because the heaters are 240V, 80% capacity of 12-ga wire (20Amp) is 16 amps means that you could have 240*16 = 3840W of electric baseboard on one circuit. Is this correct?

How would you get cat pee out of an electric heater?
Question by K: How would you get cat pee out of an electric heater?
We have electric baseboard heating in our apartment, and one of our cats (I have my suspicions that it’s the one that should find a new home soon because he is awful) decided that instead of peeing in the litter box today, he was going to pee IN THE REGISTER. Now – imagine the worst thing you’ve ever smelled. Got it? Ok, now multiply that by 7 gabillion. We were gagging the smell was so bad. We opened the window in the bathroom (the heater is directly under it), put a fan in the window to exhaust, cranked the heater up to high (to see if maybe it’d burn it off)….is there anything else we can be doing, besides finding the cat a new home?
Thank you in advance!
I forgot to say that he IS fixed. He just missed the litter box.

Well, what I do is get a spray bottle and fill it with diluted bleach water and with the heater off, spray a pretty good coating then be sure to let it dry before turning the heater back on. Usually just once is enough but it may take a few times off doing this. The cat was actually marking his territory so it’s probably time to get him neutered and that should stop this behavior or atleast most of it.

Electric baseboard heating? What do I need to know purchase replacement heaters?
Question by Curious1: Electric baseboard heating? What do I need to know purchase replacement heaters?
We have electric baseboard heating that has functioned very well for many years. However, they are now starting to provide less than adequate heat or not work at all. We do not have ducting for forced air heating and cooling, and the extra insulation and attention to detail in the original contruction has meant that electric heat has not become unduly burdensome even with rising electicity costs. Any advice will be appreciated.

Electric Baseboard Heat Question?
Question by Sks144: Electric Baseboard Heat Question?
I have a few electric baseboard heaters in my apartment at college, and since they are my only source of heat, I generally run them constantly at a moderate temperature.. It generally runs up my electric bill a good bit, almost 200 a month, but I don’t have many other options.. Anyways, I will be going home for winter break for a month, and I was wondering whether I should just turn off all the heaters, because they are expensive to run and I won’t even be there (fire hazard as well).. There is an apartment below me and one above me, I am in the middle, so I am not too worried about pipes freezing, but I don’t know what else I should be concerned with.. Can anyone give me some advice?

If you’re confident the pipes won’t freeze, shut em off. I in doubt, set em at 50 degrees.

Is a baseboard heater or electric fireplace under my new Plasma TV going to cause damage and which is better?
Question by owen h: Is a baseboard heater or electric fireplace under my new Plasma TV going to cause damage and which is better?
I live in Mass. and its just getting too cold for my space heater in my bedroom. I can install a baseboard heater but the only wall it can go on is right under my Plasma TV.
The electric fireplace would also go right under the Plasma but since the TV is mounted it would vent out the heat approx. 18in in front instead of right under it like the baseboard heater.
I know heat next to electronics is not a good idea and i think the electric fireplace would be safer for the TV since the heat is farther away. I will still need an additional heat source from a space heater since they dont punch out much heat but thats ok.
thanks a lot for any help…i need it!
Best answer:
Answer by tshnobodysfool
You mean the plasma tv doesn’t heat up the room enough? J/K I wouldn’t put another heat source UNDER your plasma – they run hot already and electronics don’t do well with excess heat. It will burn out/break down/ DIE. As far from the tv as possible – then the heat in the room will be distributed more evenly anyway.

Electric baseboard heaters wont work?
Question by Cynthia: Electric baseboard heaters wont work?
Hi,
I just bought this new house and we had inspectors go through with us, and all the heaters worked. Now that we moved in, it seems like the day after we moved everything in, at least 3 heaters do not work. We have the thermo at max and they are still ice cold.
I am a complete noob when it comes to this, so I am not even sure what to look for. We have alot of switches in the house that don’t do anything, so I am assuming those are for power sockets.
There are some heaters that have a turny-knob thing, I tried turning it and it clicked but still nothing happened. My bf checked the fuses, they are all good.
What else should we do to troubleshoot?
Thanks.
Best answer:
Answer by Jeff K
Call your inspector back and have him confirm they are not working.
Other possibilities:
Could there be a fuse on the heater elements themselves? Circuit breaker in the basement shut?
Thermostat set to heat with high temperature selected?
