Here in the north (Wisconsin ) you’d be much better off with the gas heat.

are space heaters cheaper to run than electric baseboard heaters?
Question by matthew b: are space heaters cheaper to run than electric baseboard heaters?

Answer by wiredguy1
this depends entirely on the amount of electricity used by each appliance. more info is needed. but for the most part, no. most baseboard heaters run on 240 volts. space heaters run on 120 and will use around 1500 watts to run. the same amount of heat with baseboards heaters will use 1/2 that much.

Would it be cheaper to use electric baseboard heat or portable heaters to heat a studio in the winter?
Question by Anna: Would it be cheaper to use electric baseboard heat or portable heaters to heat a studio in the winter?
I will be living in a third floor studio (about 400 sq. feet) in Chicago. The management has recently installed electric baseboard heat, therefore I was not able to get price quotes, before signing the lease. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with electric baseboard heat and how much it costs during the winter months? What would be a cheaper alternative? I signed a lease for a year – so I would not be able to make any major changes. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Kerosene heaters, propane heaters, or prefeerably natural gas heaters. Just have a vent for the exhaust.
Electric baseboard heaters are energy inefficent.
Electric is the most expensive source of energy.
And baseboard heating is even worse.

is it cheaper to use electricty to have my wall heater on or to plug in a portable heater?
Question by anonymity: is it cheaper to use electricty to have my wall heater on or to plug in a portable heater?
It is so cold out and I am curious to know if it costs more to run my (not gas) wall heater or to purchase a portable heater. I really want to purchase one of the electric fireplaces that home depot sells, just wondering if it would help save my power bill.
Thank you
I am in Seattle

Every area is different I would use the wall heater and check the first bill and then try the plug in and see if its less expensive.

only if you can choose which rooms to turn the baseboard heaters on and some off. I have electric central heat but most of my rooms were unused, so got a electric heater with blower, and it kept my bedroom and bath very warm. My electric bill also went way down.

Question by Bandito: Would it be cheaper to use a baseboard heater or a small electric fan heater to heat up a single room?
My room has a baseboard heater that is about ~5 feet wide but I’ve just been running my small electric fan heater every now and then when it’s cold. Just wondering if in the long run it would save money to use the baseboard heater?

if the baseboard heater is a 240 volt unit it will provide more wattage at a lower cost. however if it is a 110 volt unit the difference is almost the same

If you have currently have baseboard heat thru the house, and want to turn it off at night and only use the space heaters, then yes, you’ll probably save some money.
Be careful, though. Keep the space heaters away from curtains and blankets.

Is it cheaper to run electric baseboard heaters or to have space heaters?
Question by tabitha: Is it cheaper to run electric baseboard heaters or to have space heaters?
I live in Ohio so it gets cold here during the winter. Last year we moved to a new place and it had electric baseboard heaters. Which did not keep the house warm at all! There is only one in each room Problem is that not only was it still cold in the house but it cost about 500 a month to run them. The only way to turn them off was to turn off the breaker. So this year I wanna do the space heaters. The 2 I have so far Have kept it pretty warm. Mind you the coldest its been is 30. But Im not running even running the m on high yet. I just wanna know the best way to save money! Thanks!!
the problem with the baseboards is they hardly give off any heat. and no matter if their on high or low they still coast as much money to run.

As they are using the source, electricity, there isn’t going to be much difference. What you can do is run the baseboard system at a very low level and only use the space heaters in the rooms where you actually are. Also look and see what you can do to minimize heat loss. Look on the web for info on weatherizing.
