Solar Water Heater Plans – Find Out What The Best Ones Are
Solar Water Heater Plans – Find Out What The Best Ones Are
There really are no top solar water heater plans, as they all encompass their good qualities as well as their bad; however, one of the simplest and most efficient plan that I have came across was the Khanh solar water heater. This was a “make it yourself” item which appeared in the Mother Earth Magazine during June of 1977.
The unit basically was a used 66 gallon hot water tank, which had been coated with stovepipe flat black paint. An inventor named Dinh Khanh designed and built the unit for only 0 dollars. This particular sun powered water heater was about as effortless to construct as you will ever find.
The water tank was enclosed within an insulated framework which was sheltered on the top with a section of Plexiglas. When Khanh bolstered his solar collector adjacent to a southern facing wall, he was able to preheat his water to a tepid 100 degrees. The cost savings to him was substantial and reached as much as 50 percent of his total hot water

Is my husband’s best friend correct?
Question by pmuzzy58: Is my husband’s best friend correct?
My husband and I live in a large multistory apartment building built around 1980. The plumbing is bad. After you take a shower or bath, there is a weird sludge left in a perfectly spotless bathtub. I have to clean the tub after each shower with bleach and cleansers. So I know the tub is spotless. The baseboard heaters are original equipment. Our last electric bill was almost 0. An average bill during the off winter months are around . We only use the baseboard heater in the master bedroom. The second BR is closed off. We use a space heater in the living room to heat it. Our neighbors bill are all around 0 to 0. There is a strange black mold around where the wall and ceiling meet. The stove in the unit is over 30 years old. It says 1975 on the inside of the oven. It still works a little. Can’t use 2 of the top burners. We have noisy neighbors and the landlord will not handle any complaint against them. When we use one of the electrical outlets in the living room, the circuit breaker kicks back almost every time. I’m tired of paying for a run down apartment building. The building was nice when we moved in 2 years ago. The landlord would come and fix the problems fast. Now, he won’t do anything at all. So with all of these problems, my husband and I are planning to move this year to a new rental house or duplex. We don’t want another apartment after this one. My husband makes a decent living. I work part time from home. My husband’s friend says we need our landlord’s reference to get into another rental. He says that breaking a lease is as bad as an eviction. We have never been evicted. I want out before the lease ends in June. My husband wants to tolerate the conditions until then. I want out in April. I’m concerned that the black mold near the ceiling might be toxic mold. Who is right myself or my husband’s friend? Please help! Want out!

Which state are you in? If you are in New York State and you have an annual lease , It is better you talk with your landlord and get a release from him ( Waiver). If the lease is month to month then you can get out of the lease by giving 30 day notice to leave.

What’s the best heating system to install in this house?
Question by whitewolfe: What’s the best heating system to install in this house?
We are considering purchasing a home that has no conventional heating system and no basement. It was originally a hunter’s cabin that was added onto over the years. It’s a very interesting home with lots of great features and a LOT of land, but it basically has no heating system and no basement in which to install a furnace. This home is in Massachusetts.
The previous owners used only a wood burning stove and space heaters. I don’t want to rely on the stove, I would prefer conventional heating. What kinds of heating systems could be installed without spending megabucks?
I think electric baseboard would be the easiest, but I hear it’s not a great choice for cold climates. I’ve also heard about radiant floor heat, and found a company online that says it will only cost .50 square foot to install (the home is no more than 1500) and that seems pretty cheap, and from what I can understand, it’s more efficient? But doesn’t the floor have to be ripped up?
What would be best?
Well, it has absolutely nothing underneath the house, but it does have a decent, clean crawl space in between the 1st and 2nd floors, if that is what you mean.
A system can be installed in there? There is no attic. Interesting thoughts about the radiant heat, I didn’t realize that they were water pipes.

I think radiant floor heating would work well in a place like that, but it would mean having to redo pretty much every floor in the house. It is, however, quite efficient. I think the cost return would be good as well and add value to the place should you decide to resell later.

How to Select the Best Bedroom Heater
How to Select the Best Bedroom Heater
A bedroom heater is a must have for every home where winter are cold. Why would you want to leave you central heating on all night? It is much more economical to use a portable heater in the bedroom. Here are things you should consider while selecting a heater for your bedroom.
We spend almost one third of our life in bed and there is no need to have central heating on while you sleep. It is only the bedroom that you want to be warm at night, is not it? For the bedroom you can get a separate wall heater or a portable electrical heater. Make sure you select a heater that is safe and doesn’t require constant attention. Heaters with open radian element should not be used. It can start a fire if a curtain or your cloth blows across the heating element.
Selecting your Bedroom Heater
The best choice for a bedroom heater would be oil filled radiators. They are safe, silent (which is very important while you are asleep) and they provide enough heat to

What is the best way to heat my apartment and save money?
Question by T.Horn: What is the best way to heat my apartment and save money?
I live in Ohio, in a one-bedroom rental in an old house. My heating is a mix of hot water radiators that keep the temperature at about 66 degrees, and 40-year-old Singer baseboard heaters to supplement them. I also have a portable furnace/infrared heater. I pay for electric, but not hot water. My electric rate is $.00584/KWH.
So far, my electric bills have been quite reasonable — about per month, even this December. But I’ve only been using the infrared portable furnace when I’m in the living room and have only turned on the electric baseboard in the bedroom for about an hour at a time, to heat it up before bed or in the morning. It’s gotten to the point, though, that it’s too cold to have no heat on in the bedroom. The portable furnace’s fan wakes me up, which rules it out as an option. Should I keep the baseboard in the bedroom running all the time, or would that run up a huge electric bill? I’m a grad student and want to keep my bill under 0. What’s the best way to heat my place?
I should add that my landlady is a complete slumlord who legally gets around having to heat my apartment to a tolerable 68 degrees by having these prehistoric electric baseboards installed and billing the place as “a mix of electric and radiators.” They’re so old they don’t have anywhere to plug a thermostat into.

Home Heating Systems – Which System is Best for your Home?
Perhaps you are finding yourself at the point of needing to replace your old furnace or heater. You’ve gotten all the use you could out of her and now it’s time for something new. Here is a quick list of your various home heating system options.
Furnace
A furnace is the popular choice for home heating by most homeowners. Powered by gas, electricity, oil or propane, a furnace uses a fan to drive hot air through your ductwork and into your home.
The biggest issue with these types of forced air systems is their efficiency. Also, the ductwork needs to be kept sealed or your heat gets lost.
Another reason for their popularity is because they can also be used for central air conditioning in the summer as well.
Boiler
A boiler works by heating hot water and then distributing it to radiators, baseboard units or radiant heat tubes that can be placed under the floor.

There is high density and low density. Low density is safer, operates cooler and more efficient. However, low density units are longer…take up more space. Which in my opinion is more desirable.
