Is it cheaper to run electric baseboard heaters or to have space heaters?

Question by tabitha: Is it cheaper to run electric baseboard heaters or to have space heaters?
I live in Ohio so it gets cold here during the winter. Last year we moved to a new place and it had electric baseboard heaters. Which did not keep the house warm at all! There is only one in each room Problem is that not only was it still cold in the house but it cost about 500 a month to run them. The only way to turn them off was to turn off the breaker. So this year I wanna do the space heaters. The 2 I have so far Have kept it pretty warm. Mind you the coldest its been is 30. But Im not running even running the m on high yet. I just wanna know the best way to save money! Thanks!!
the problem with the baseboards is they hardly give off any heat. and no matter if their on high or low they still coast as much money to run.

As they are using the source, electricity, there isn’t going to be much difference. What you can do is run the baseboard system at a very low level and only use the space heaters in the rooms where you actually are. Also look and see what you can do to minimize heat loss. Look on the web for info on weatherizing.

we use electric heaters!! the trick is to put plastic up on the windows. if u have any doors that dont have seal jsut put a towel or blanket on the floor up against it! we have been doin this for a few yrs now… considereing we live in a trailer…. and also if u have any bedroom that u dont use u can close the door and put a blanket over… that keeps the coldness in the part thats blocked off!!!

Watt for Watt there may not be that much difference. One big advantage with the space heaters is they should give you greater control. Heat only the space you are living in. Close off all unused rooms, even if it is just over night. The down side of space heaters is the safety concerns. Do not use extension cords, and keep combustibles well away from the heater. Any time you can turn anything off you will save money. Anything you can do to insulate may be the best thing you can do to save money. Good luck.
