what is a hydronic baseboard heater?

Answer by yaket2003
Hydronic heat is hot water running thru the hvac unit or in this case baseboard heaters. this is usually generated by the water heater. You will find this used in the south. It does not generate enough heat to work in colder climates. Many times I have turned the water heater up so people could keep their apartment warm and still have a hot shower. If you have any more questions please put them in the detail section.

Hydronic Electric baseboard heaters vs. standard?
Question by kolanksyy: Hydronic Electric baseboard heaters vs. standard?
I have 20+ yr old standard electric baseboard heaters in my summer home which are pointy, ugly and starting to rust. The house is infrequently used in the winter and we keep the thermostat at 45 to prevent the pipes bursting. I thought I could just replace the outside covers but guess the whole unit needs replacing. I’ve run across standard units for less than but also found “hydronic” ones that are over 0. Why are they so expensive, what’s the difference b/w these and standard units and is the technology really worth the extra cost? If we buy the hydronic units, how easy is it to swap out the old ones? Do we need an HVAC guy? Will the thermostat for the old units still work withthe new ones?
Best answer:
Answer by Bill
I have the same set-up. The hydronic units are cheaper to run because they heat a fluid and the fluid slowly releases the heat. You can swap them out, as long as the themostat is rated for the same voltage. (availible in 110v or 220v). And yes anybody that can wire a light and use a screwdriver should be able to swap them out. (make sure power is off!!)

How close can you place furniture to water baseboard heaters?
Question by Laura B: How close can you place furniture to water baseboard heaters?
I am moving into a condo this weekend which is heated through water baseboard heaters. In the bedroom, the baseboard heaters line 2 walls and there really is only one wall where a bed can go. I do not really want to put it there but the spot I do like is in front of the heater. My bed is a wooden frame platform bed. How far would i want to put it from the heater to keep it out of danger. Or should I just suck it up and put the bed on the wall without the heaters?

Answer by EagleWatcher
Water heater and wooden bed frame? I’d keep a distance of at least 6″ for each other. If it was electric heat, the distance would double.

Heaters – The Various Kinds And Usage
Heaters – The Various Kinds And Usage
A heater is an essential commodity for people living in cold regions. Installing a heater inside the house becomes necessary where the outside temperature falls below -10ºC. Just thinking about such low temperatures gives us the shiver. There are a variety of ways to maintain a comfortable warm atmosphere in the house.
The traditional furnace sucks in all the air in the room, heats it up, and redistributes it throughout the room. To maintain the heat in the room and prevent the fire from dying out, various fuels are used. Some of the common ones are gas, oil, electricity, wood and coal. These traditional furnaces raise the room temperature, thus making it a comfortable place to stay in winters, and also remove dust particles.
The radiant baseboard heater heats people ad objects without heating the surrounding air. It is ideal for room where it is difficult to have the traditional furnaces. More expensive than the traditional heaters, they

Baseboard Heaters: Portable or Built-in?
As the cold season begins to set in, it is important to be well prepared. For years, people have looked to electric heaters to keep them and their families warm, during the cold months. Yet purchasing a heater can be confusing sometimes. Whether it be wall, space or baseboard it is important to purchase the right kind of heater the suits you. The first rate staff at Air-N-Water have been researching and testing multiple heaters and have posted their results online.
Base Board Heaters
Electric baseboard heaters are heaters designed to line the wall and provide heat for the entire room by using convection heat to circulate the air. As the baseboard heater heats the immediate air, it begins to rise and the cold air begins to fall to the floor, only to be immediately heated and continue this

How are Electric Baseboard Heaters different from other heaters? They are silent, inexpensive, and safe. Since electric baseboard heaters heat the room through convection (usually without the help of a fan), this keeps them quiet. Electric powered is the only type of heater suitable for small enclosed areas, nothing is burned so there is not a threat from toxic fumes or things like embers and sparks. Auto safety thermal cutout protection will turn off the electrical heaters in case of overheat, and the safety will reactivate the heater if the heater returns to normal operating temperatures. Most should be thoroughly tested and UL or ETL listed.

wall heater pilot will not stay on?
Question by Robert M: wall heater pilot will not stay on?
installed a new thermocoupler and pilot stayed for about twenty minutes. during that time I tried to turn the heater on but nothing happened. I also jumped the thermostat wires to no avail.
After the twenty minutes the pilot does not stay on at all. Any help will be appreciated. Don’t tell me to call a seviceman.
If anything, I will replace the whole unit myself.

Answer by Dustin
If you can’t figure out the pilot light without help, you definitely can’t repair the whole unit yourself. Call a repairman before you have to take a trip to the emergency room after the firemen put out the house fire.

Looking for advice on Electric Outdoor Patio Heaters (Wall Mounted)?
Question by EG: Looking for advice on Electric Outdoor Patio Heaters (Wall Mounted)?
I have an outdoor area behind a bar/restaurant about 10 feet wide by 30 feet long. I want to heat the area over the winter and do not want to deal with propane stand up heaters again. Does anyone have any recommendations for electric heater(s)that I can mount overhead? I know I may need to buy a few to heat the entire area. I have heard that standard 120v is a waste of time…that I must wire it with 240v. Any advice???

Answer by Controlfreak38
My advice is do not use electric NO MATTER WHAT!!!!!!!! They cost so much more to run than gas or propane. Get some wall mounted propane or gas radiant heaters like these.
http://www.infrasave.com/en/luminous.asp
The install cost will be higher but it will have a very short payback due to the LARGE cost savings to run them vs electric.

Call your local supplier of oil, propane, or natural gas. They have trained professionals to either repair or replace the heaters.
Sometimes when things are “old”, they are also way too inefficient, and at that point it makes sense to get a new one.
Even though a new one might cost a few more bucks up front, you end up saving in the long run, because an efficient unit uses less fuel. And plus, you’ll feel safer knowing that its not going to conk out in the middle of the night and flood your house with carbon monoxide and kill everyone.
OH, by the way go buy yourself some carbon monoxide detectors while your out shopping for xmas presents.
Nothing says “happy holidays” better than in laws that are still alive and well.

Q&A: What is the wattage of a 42″ Toshiba Regza TV? How about a wall heater (found in apartments)?
Question by Anvera12: What is the wattage of a 42″ Toshiba Regza TV? How about a wall heater (found in apartments)?
I believe I’m being ripped of by my electric company. I know this winter’s been cold, but from a bill to a 6 bill is kind of outrageous. I can do the calculations myself (I’m a mechanical engineer) but can’t seem to find this information on the ‘net. Any help will be appreciated.
How about when you use 4 of the wall heaters, and then go to 1 heater to save on electricity and the bill goes up? To me, it sounds like there’s something wrong. Also, I live in a 2-bedroom apt. It’s just me- not there most of the day. And to me, it is really high, compared to my bf’s, which he pays like for this month (of course, it’s a different county).

Answer by mike1942f
6 for home heating is not outrageous. To start with you need to check the kilowatt hour rates for the periods you are comparing, mine jumped 20% last fall when a fixed rate period ended. You should be able to find the wattage of both on a plaque next to the power cord/electrical. Of course, with the TV, it may be against the wall. A small space heater is usually 15 amps or 1.8 kilowatt hours per hour of on time. A wall heater may be higher.
The owners manual, here http://www.tacp.toshiba.com/televisions/product.asp?model=42HL167 should have the data. Unfortunately, my attempts end when 346 of 376 Mb are done. Since it is an LCD with back lighting, I would guess 200-300 watts when on.

solar air heaters
youtube}
Solar air heaters copied design from Starfire solar and Richallenmusic. These are 33″X 75″ each, 6 inches deep. The downspouts were 10 ft aluminum cut in half. There are 12 pop cans stuck inside the downspouts. The tops and bottoms are cut out on the one on the left but only the bottoms on the one on the right. I used a beer can opener to puncture the sides of the top cans so air can flow thru to the top heat chamber. The downspouts are caulked at the top and the bottom to seal off the heating area outside the downspouts. the top and bottom air chambers are also sealed off with foil heat tape. I noticed when it gets hot the tin on the face of the top air chamber would buckle a little so on the left one I added a 1X2 over the tin after it was foil taped to help hold it better. The fan is an old condenser blower from my furnace that puts out a lot of CFM. I don’t know the exact amount but it seems to handle both heaters without a problem. Home depot sells a 4 in duct boost fan for around . which would probably work ok and would be cheaper. cost was under 0. each including screws , paint , etc. I used tin cans that were 4 in dia. to go thru the wall. (La choi sweet sour chicken). with the high speed blower they run steady for about 4 or 5 hrs at this time of year.

Corrosion Can Occur in Multiple Places in Water Heaters. Here’s the Problem Spots
Corrosion Can Occur in Multiple Places in Water Heaters. Here’s the Problem Spots
Electric Elements
Galvanic corrosion is most common in electrical water heaters and appear on the electrical elements. The elements are the component that heats the water. Elements have a copper sheath and a steel base and if those specific parts become wet, electrolysis and corrosion may occur. An electrical element may be corroded enough to fail to heat the water. If you replace it and then in less than a year, the element may corrode again, then it is due to a faulty anode. Replacing the anode will prevent further element destruction. One way to prevent corrosion is to install galvanized unions with the plastic nipples on the top of the tank. Now you can thread galvanized pipe to the steel plumbing into the wall. Like galvanized plumbing, plastic plumbing will never have to deal with galvanic corrosion. PB and CPVC can adapt to most metal pipes.
Corrosion Caused By Softened Water
Softening water is the act of exchanging salt for
